Happy Birthday to You in Watercolor

The more I play with the Happy Birthday to You stamp set, the more I like it. It’s one of this year’s Sale-A-Bration sets, which you can get for free with a $50 order. I used watercolor with inks for this card.

The card is a simple, classic layout.

I started with this lovely floral pattern from the Best Dressed Designer Series Paper (DSP) in the January – June 2020 Mini Catalog. One, it’s pretty, and two, it gave me my color cue: Petal Pink and Lovely Lipstick. I was able to match it with a piece from the Lily Impressions DSP (which is another Sale-A-Bration product you can get) which looks like a canvas painted in Lovely Lipstick.

I used our watercolor paper, which really is the best option when watercoloring with inks. First, I stamped the Happy Birthday to You cake in Stazon and then added the Celebrate sentiment across the top.

If you haven’t used this technique, its easy! Press your closed ink pad a few times and when it opens you will have a spot of ink on the inside lid. Or, you can add a drop of ink refill to the open lid. Then use an aqua painter to color.

The cake is painted in Petal Pink, the flowers in Lovely Lipstick, and the leaves in Old Olive. I added a few Pretty Peacock buds since there are a few splashes of that color in the DSP.

What I like about watercoloring is the fluid look of the coloring, and the lightness it can create. For the cake, I took a very light bit of Sahara Sand to outline the image. Not something I do every time, but it helps to give it some dimension.

To finish the card, I wrapped two ribbons around the DSP front: first the Polka Dotted Tulle then a piece of the Lovely Lipstick grosgrain over that. Again, a simple, classic layout. If you are so inclined, it would be easy to add some sprinkles of sequins, rhinestones or pearls. Last month I posted a card using this stamp set, but colored with Stampin’ Blends. Take a look here.

If you don’t have a Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator, I’d be happy to help you place a Sale-A-Bration order so you can get this Happy Birthday to You stamp set for free. Or just click here for my online store!
