Design Inspiration for this Beautiful World Card

Do you ever start creating with an idea, and the end result is nothing like that idea? That’s the joy and frustration of design inspiration, and it’s the origin of this card. I wanted to make a card using the two globes in the Beautiful World stamp set. Looking through Pinterest, I saw a graphic of two old world maps, side by side. That was my starting point, and I would give my card an old world look.

I picked a couple of different papers from the World of Good designer series paper to try as backgrounds. I stamped and cut the two globes and started playing with the layout. Of course, my inspiration graphic was two very large globes on a big wall map. These two small globes, side by side, did not have the same effect! But I was determined to stick with the circles and not add the globe stands. I ended up adding a third circle with the compass image.

Next up was deciding on a color scheme. Since I had decided on the neutral map background, it gave me a lot of options. Eventually I settled on one of my favorite color combinations: blue and green. I picked these two shades (Pretty Peacock and Old Olive) when I realized I hadn’t used my Reversible Ribbon, which has these two colors. Take inspiration wherever you find it!

Supplies used to make World Map dies card

Instead of the stamped images, I opted to die-cut one map in green and one in blue, using the coordinating World Map dies. I cut two circles from the paper that has a lightly printed script on it for the back of each map. To help define them, I sponged the edges in black ink, along with just a hint of sponged black on the paper. The compass is stamped in black on Crumb Cake cardstock, the edge is also sponged in black, and it has a black mat.

I added a cardstock mat in Old Olive to the Pretty Peacock card front, so both colors would be front and center to balance the two globes. Add that beautiful ribbon, and voila! What appears at first to be a fairly simple card is now complete. It wasn’t all that simple to design, and it looks nothing like my inspiration graphic, but I absolutely love how it turned out!
