Country Home: vintage style that’s on trend

The Country Home stamp set is one of my favorites from the Holiday catalog. It’s not exactly vintage and its not exactly rustic, but it is definitely on trend. It seems that every store I go into these days has milk cans and cotton plants!

I’ve made lots of cards with this set and this is one of my favorites.

Card featuring Country Home stamp set by Stampin' Up and designed by Paula Cannon, using watercolor technique.

With a tall image like this you can change up a basic layout with a simple square mat that doesn’t frame the focal image. For this card I used the coordinating Country Lane Designer Series Paper. I also used the DSP to inspire the colors in my foliage. For the milk can, I stayed on trend and kept it traditional with the smoky slate gray.

I decided to use watercoloring for this card, so I stamped the images on our watercolor paper using Stazon ink. I painted with an aqua painter and inks. Notice that the front of the milk can is lighter in color, with the deeper color shading along the sides to create the illusion of roundness. A small swish of color underneath the milk can grounds it. Just a few touches like this can give you some depth instead of being a flat image.

And I love the little sign for the can! It’s a small oval stamp that you can add to the milk can or the water pitcher, and there are four small greetings that fit inside. I just think its cute and adds a touch of character!

Country Home is part of the Country Lane Suite which is filled with fun products. One of my favorites is the Tin Tile embossing folder. Its such a classic, vintage look but it really works with all kinds of images. (See it on this spooky card.)

Here, I embossed it on smoky slate card stock, the same color as the card base.

Then I used the brush tip of my black marker to outline the card stock to set it apart and show off the embossing. You’ll see I did the same thing around the watercolor paper.

TIP: outlining a piece of card stock with a marker is a nice trick if you don’t want a lot of layers.
