Find Inspiration: Casing the Catalog
August 16, 2019|Posted in: Creativity
Where do you find inspiration for your stamping and crafting? A great resource for ideas and color combinations is any Stampin’ Up! catalog. When I’m feeling creatively challenged, I will often skim through a catalog. I look for design ideas, project ideas, or color combinations.
Today’s card is one I cased from the 2019-2020 Annual Catalog.
I love the new stamp set Inspiring Iris. Besides the iris images, there is a fun carnation and a sweet rose. I wanted to try the carnations but I kept drawing a blank. Then I saw this card on page 111 and decided to make my own version.
First, I knew I would change the color scheme. And the black tag isn’t really my style. Nor do I have the washi tape. But finding inspiration is not about copying something exactly; it’s about using the ideas to create your version with what you have.
I started with one of my new favorite colors, Seaside Spray, as the base. Next I chose Purple Posy and Petal Pink for my flowers, with Pear Pizzazz for my green. This is a two-step stamp set. I stamped the line images with Memento Black ink, then the solid images with the various colors. (See another Seaside Spray card here.)
The images don’t need to line up perfectly, and the stamps in this set are photopolymer, so I did not use my Stamparatus. I just eyeballed it and stamped. I staggered the heights, knowing I would cover the bottom tips.
In lieu of the washi tape strip at the bottom, it was easy to substitute ribbon. As I laid out the ribbon, before adhering everything in place, the card seemed a bit plain. So I tried one of the little leaf embellishments from the Bird Ballad Trinkets, and tied it around the ribbon with some twine. That helped and it’s a fun way to use those cute trinkets.
Then an idea popped in my head! I used an aqua painter to soak up some Seaside Spray ink, then tapped it across my finger to add a splattered background. I think it looks like a bit of rain falling. Maybe not, but I do like the end result.
So, the next time you need to find inspiration, take a look through one of your catalogs.
