A Painted Poppies Birthday Card

January 17, 2020|Posted in: Creativity

Maybe its because the designer series paper is watercolor painting, or maybe its just the stamp set name, Painted Poppies, but I wanted one of my first cards with this set to be done with watercoloring.

First I selected this fun blue-background print from the Peaceful Poppies Designer Series Paper. I wanted a bright, fun card and this paper fits the bill. The poppies in the DSP are colored in Poppy Parade and Flirty Flamingo, so those are the colors I chose for my painting.

I used Shimmery White card stock for my poppies and leaves. If you don’t have or don’t want to use watercolor paper, this is your best alternative. It has some texture and thickness that Whisper White card stock does not, so you can still push the color around a little. Plus it gives off a little shimmery sparkle.

Using an aqua painter and ink pushed onto the ink pad lid, I started with the lighter Flirty Flamingo, then added the Poppy Parade. I took my cue from the DSP and painted the flowers more as a “wash” of color, rather than trying to create depth and realism. The leaves were painted with Mossy Meadow ink.

Once the flowers and leaves had dried, which doesn’t take long, I cut them out with the coordinating Painted Labels Dies. (You can get these two items as a bundle and save 10%).

The companion stamp set in this full Peaceful Poppies Suite is called Peaceful Moments and is a set filled with a variety of sentiments, in a lovely font. Its pretty, peaceful and modern.

For the layout I had in mind and I wanted a short greeting, so I selected the Happy Birthday stamp. I stamped the greeting on Whisper White card stock and cut it out with the larger label from the Painted Labels Dies – vertically. Then I cut the same label from Basic Black card stock.

TIP: What I had noticed is that the label die has an embossed edge. Using that as my guide, I cut the edge off of the white label. And that made the black label larger so it could be a mat. Now you can get two pieces, a label and a mat, from the same die!

The card base is Pool Party and I popped up the flowers  with Mini Stampin’ Dimensionals. I added three black flower-shaped sequins from the Peaceful Poppies Sequins pack on the center of the larger poppy. This is one of the cards we made at my January Monthly Stamp Class. I wanted to show off these lovely Painted Poppies products but I gave the ladies the option of using a clear Faceted Gem instead of sequins.

The Painted Poppies Bundle, and additional products, are on page 25 of the new January – June 2020 Mini Catalog. It’s so versatile because you can color the flowers in your favorite medium, or use the block image to color it in with just a stamp. Plus, if you buy the bundle by March 31st, you’ll be able to get a free Sale-A-Bration product! To learn more about Sale-A-Bration, click here.
