Watercolor Fun for Brilliant Autumn Leaves

Recently I shared a card using the big leaf from the Gather Together stamp set that I had colored with watercolor pencils. (see it here) However, my favorite way to color autumn leaves is with watercolor.
One reason is the colors blend and wash together, just as the colors do on real leaves as they change. Also because its just fun to play with watercolor.
This is another card with Gather Together. I stamped several of the leaf images on watercolor paper, using Stazon Jet Black ink. (a must-have so the black ink doesn’t bleed) Then I pulled out some fall-color inks and my aqua painter and began to play.
I started my watercolor fun with Crushed Curry and Old Olive, then added some Pumpkin Pie. To make some darker leaves, I added Rich Razzleberry and Cajun Craze. Just start with one color, paint a little, and add some more until you get a look you like. Then, let them dry naturally for the truest color. You can use your heat tool but the color will fade a little.
What I find fun about this technique for watercolor is that you are never sure exactly what the final result will be. More often than not, I am happy with my results. But its all play.
For my card, I knew I wanted a simple design that would showcase these brilliant autumn leaves. I picked three and layered them with a bit of a curve, then added a greeting. The “thanks” is from the Good Morning Magnolia stamp set and is stamped in Early Espresso to match the background paper which is from the Magnolia Lane DSP. I think the espresso background is rich and it really sets off the colors.
The greeting is cut with the Stitched Nested dies. And just for fun, three sequins to add an embellishment and a little sparkle.
Do you like to play with watercolor by using your ink pads and aqua painter? Try this with your leaf or floral images, then let your imagination go! For more ideas, be sure to follow me on Pinterest and Instagram.
