A Vintage Card with Watercolor Pencils

My watercolor pencils solved a problem I didn’t even know I had when I started making this card! After I bought the Gather Together stamp set, I knew I wanted to use it with the script image from Very Versailles. As I started playing with the images, I realized I wanted a translucent color for my leaf. And I wanted to stamp everything for this card and not use a die-cut leaf.
That’s what I had in my head, so that’s what I tried to do. And I think the watercolor pencils created the look I imagined.
I started with very vanilla card stock and stamped the script image with Crumb Cake ink for a faded look. Over this, I stamped the maple leaf from Gather Together in Early Espresso. Beginning with the Old Olive watercolor pencil, I colored the center of the leaf, then added Calypso Coral and Rich Razzleberry, overlapping the colors.
Once the leaf was colored,I went over it using a Blender Pen. This not only blends the colors together, but adds a softness to the coloring.
Then, like you would for any good vintage card, I sponged the edges in Crumb Cake as well as some of the card front. Lastly I roughened the edges with the side of my paper snips.
Although I used the Calypso Coral watercolor pencil, the coral card stock was a bit intense. In fact, this piece from the Woven Threads Designer Series Paper looks perfect – and its a blend of Rococo Rose and Terracotta Tile! So I used these two colors of card stock for the mat and the base of the card.
The final touch is a bow using the scalloped lace trim.
I love how it all came together! What do you think?
I did another version using jeweled tones. In addition to the watercolor pencil colors on the first card, I added Daffodil Delight and Bermuda Bay. The background on this card is another piece from Woven Threads, in Pretty Peacock. I used a bit of the Pretty Peacock scalloped linen thread (cut in half) for the bow.
This second card is the one I mailed to the Netherlands as part of Stampin’ Up’s #WorldCardSendingWeek. Demonstrators signed up to participate in a Facebook post, pledging to mail a card to the person above you in the comments. It was a fun follow-up to World Cardmaking Day. I’m looking forward to the card I’ll be getting from a demo in Canada.
